The Stellantis-owned Maserati has unveiled their brand new SUV, the Grecale. Competing directly against the Porsche Macan and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the Grecale sits below the Levante in their lineup. The Grecale is designed to house a combustion engine, self-charging hybrid and electric drivetrains. This kind of flexibility is good for customers to have different options.
Maserati and Alfa Romeo are famous Italian brands that have worked together before. What we don’t know is Stellantis owns both these brands now. Also, Maserati has built the Grecale on the FCA Girogio platform which also underpins Alfa’s Stelvio. So is the Grecale just a Stelvio underneath? Let’s find out.
Maserati Grecale SUV: Engine and performance
The Grecale will be offered in 2 hybrid powertrains and one high-performance pure combustion engine. The entry-level GT trim will get the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine along with a 48V mild hybrid system. It produces 296 hp and 450 Nm of torque. For the Modena trim, the same engine is tuned to produce 325 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The performance figures of both these engines are similar. The GT goes from 0-100 kmph in 5.6 sec whereas the Modena takes 5.3 sec.
The top-of-the-line Trofeo gets the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, unlike the other Maserati Levante Trofeo models that get a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. This V6 is borrowed from the MC20 but is detuned in the Grecale. Instead of 621 horses, the Grecale makes 523 hp and 620 Nm of torque. It sprints from a standstill to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds.
Transmission is common for all 3 powertrains. The ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission drives all four wheels.
Maserati Grecale SUV Design
|Dimension ||Maserati Grecale||Afla Romeo Stelvio |
|Width (mm)||2,163 ||1,903|
Even though they share the same Girogio platform, Maserati has improved the dimension to be more spacious than the Stelvio. It is clear from the table that the Grecale is bigger every way but the proportion of the SUV goes with the rivals.
The Grecale’s exterior is clearly inspired by the big brother, Levante. The massive front grille, the three vents on the side fender, window frames and the rear sloping roofline is similar to the Levante. Unlike the sleek headlight and fogs below them in the Levante, Grecale gets a bigger headlight assembly with no fog lights.
It gets good looking 19-inch alloys as standard but can be updated to 21-inch. Like all other Maserati’s, Grecale also gets the trident logo behind the rear door. With a similar taillight design, chrome strip between them and Maserati written over the lid it resembles a lot like the Levante.
Maserati Grecale SUV: Interior & Features
Maserati was a bit of an old school with its interior having a lot of buttons around. However, Grecale gets a massive change over. The new dash layout looks fantastic with minimum physical controls. In the centre, it has a 12.3-inch touchscreen system and an 8.8-inch touch climate control joined together. Both the driver’s display and the clock are no more analogue.
The material used depends on the trims you select. The base variants get pretty minimalist use of materials but the Modena and the Trofeo gets bespoke designs, perforated leather seats with contrast stitching and more.
The Grecale might share a few bits from the Levante and the Stelvio. But Maserati has certainly made sure it is different from them in many ways. Placed in the compact luxury SUV segment, the Grecale seems like a real threat to its rivals.
But the pricing could be a big factor here. The base GT variant is expected to cost $64,995 whereas the Macan base price is $54,900 (USA) and the Stelvio is $45,550 (USA). Is it worth paying the extra bucks? We will have to wait. Share your opinion about the new Grecale in the comments below.
