The all-new 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno has been launched in India. The hatchback now comes with a base price of Rs.6.35 lakh. Maruti mentions the new avatar of its bestselling hatch as ‘tech goes bold’. Moreover, the car has received significant styling and tech updates to stay on top of the tight competition in this segment. Furthermore, over 25,000 Baleno’s have already been booked in just 16 days. The Hyundai i20 is one of the direct competitors for the Baleno. In this article, we will compare Baleno vs i20.

Baleno vs i20: Powertrain

The 2022 Baleno gets its power from a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder DualJet K12N petrol engine. This motor has a total output power of 90hp and 113 Nm of peak torque. A 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT gearbox are available as transmission options. The manual variant provides an efficiency of 22.35 kmpl, while the AMT variant provides 22.94 kmpl

On the other hand, the Hyundai i20 is available in multiple drivetrains. The first 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, petrol motor generates 83hp with a 5-speed manual gearbox and 88hp with the CVT transmission. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine can churn out 120hp. This engine gets 2 transmission options. 7-speed dual-clutch auto and iMT (clutchless manual gearbox). A third diesel motor is a 1.5-litre unit that can produce 100hp. This unit integrates with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Baleno vs i20: Exterior and Dimension

Both cars are compact and look premium. The 2022 Baleno has a more updated and modern look. The 2022 model gets updates such as a new front grille, headlamps and new signature LED DRLs. The side profile gets new 16-inch alloy wheels, strong shoulder lines, and a chrome window lining. The rear tailgate and tail lamp also get a new and modern styling. ‘Crafted Futurism’ is the name given to Suzuki’s new design philosophy. The Baleno is the first vehicle in the Nexa lineup to feature this new design styling.

Interior and Tech

Baleno gets a modern and spacious cabin. The dashboard gets a three-layer sculpted design with a black-silver- blue colour finish in the high-end models. Moreover, the 9.0-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system supports all new connectivity options including Suzuki connect.

The Baleno gets a 318-litre boot and a 60:40 split option to increase the boot capacity. 

The i20’s interior is premium and user-friendly. The low dashboard provides better road visibility and the infotainment system and climate controls are well placed for a good user experience.

Hyundai i20 interiorFeatures in the i20 include a sunroof, air purifier, ambient lighting, tilt and telescopic steering. The infotainment system is 10.25-inch and supports all modern connectivity features. Also, the car gets a Bose sound system and digital instrument cluster. The i20 gets a 311-litre boot. The i20 also provides an option to fold the rear backrest to increase the luggage room. but the seats don’t split 60:40 like the Baleno. 

When compared to the Baleno, the Hyundai i20 is a bit more spacious on the inside considering the slight difference in the leg space and headroom.

Pricing

The base variant of the Hyundai i20 starts at Rs.6.98 lakh and goes up to ₹ 10.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Baleno comes at a base price of Rs.6.35 lakh and goes up to Rs.9.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Final Verdict

The Baleno comes loaded with tech and features for the price it comes at. However, the i20 features 3 different powertrain options. If you are looking for a premium vehicle on a budget the Baleno is a good choice. If you are into performance and wants to own a premium and sporty looking vehicle go for the i20.
