BMW Group Procures Alpina Brand Entirely

BMW Alpina

The Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH & Co. KG, simply known as Alpina is considered a German car manufacturer. Although, they started as a component supplier for BMW back in the 1960s. Impressed with their work, BMW started working closely with them since 1964. Now after almost 58 years BMW Group has acquired the Alpina brand altogether.

Even though Alpina is now owned by the BMW Group, they will operate as a separate entity until the end of 2025. Scroll down to know more.

BMW – Alpina acquisition details

As of March 10th 2022, Alpina belongs to BMW Group. But the complete details of the acquisition is not disclosed. Also, both brands have been working on long term agreements. The recent one took place at the end of 2020 which was extended up to 31st of December 2025. So this gives the right for Alpina to work as a separate entity until the deadline.

Currently, their association is so close that the Alpina models are produced on the same production line as BMWs (Hence considered a car manufacturer). Alpina installs their tuned engines to the car manually by hand, which is then sent to BMW for further installations and again bought back to Alpina’s facility for final touches.

Once the merger is complete, BMW will take over Alpina’s facility and slowly blend in the division inside the company. The cars will be completely produced at their facility and the models will sit alongside other BMW models in showrooms.

Alpina GmbH’s Co-Managing Director, Andreas Bovensiepen mentioned “We recognised the challenges facing the automotive industry early on and are now setting the right course for Alpina and for our family firm, Bovensiepen. We made a conscious decision not to sell Alpina to just any manufacturer because BMW and Alpina have worked together and trusted one another for decades. That is why it is the right decision strategically for the Alpina brand to be managed by the BMW Group in the future.”

Alpina’s Best works

Alpina over the years has made a few BMWs very iconic. The most iconic Alpina model happens to be the BMW E30 or termed as the Alpina B3 2.7. Back in the 80s, the 3 Series featured a 2.7-litre inline-6 engine producing 204 hp and 265 Nm of torque. The performance seems average but the B3 was known for its amenities. Alpina had made such a wonderful blend of sophistication and luxury, the car was an instant hit. Alpina also sold the B3 as a Coupe, Convertible and a Wagon (Touring). In fact, the B3 is still available as a Saloon and Touring model.

Right now, BMW’s 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series, X3/X4 and the X7 gets Alpina’s customization. They are sold as Alpina D3 S & B3, D5 S & B5, B7, B8, XD3/XD4 and XB7 respectively.
