Technology is taking a leap in automating anything and everything around us. Dissuading labour and creating an easy flowing environment are the primary objectives of this course of action. It is primarily an advancement for the automobile industry because of the emergence of automatic transmission. In today’s fast-growing cities, it is always the easier choice to switch to automatic transmission because of the maneuver through stop and go traffic. A great number of car manufacturers around the globe are shifting to favouring automatic cars more than manual. It’s almost a revolution in the industry, to speak factually. But before we dig deeper, it is important to understand the basics of an automatic transmission.

What is an automatic transmission and how does it work?

An automatic transmission makes use of sensors that permit it to shift gears at the right time by using the internal oil pressure. Shifting gears occurs while the transmission is disconnected from the engine temporarily, that’s treated through the torque converter. While the driver performs a vital position in the operation of a car with a manual transmission, in an automatic transmission the driver simply selects D at the shifter and the car does all of the hard work. Cars use fluid pressure to shift gears independently. The core of the automatic transmission is the planetary gear set. This element is responsible for increasing the single gear ratio of the gearbox. The automatic transmission fluid provides the pressure required to start the belts and clutches. These belts and clutches determine which gear the vehicle should operate in. This fluid not only cools and lubricates the moving parts of the gearbox, it also helps drive the vehicle .The torque converter is installed on the gearbox as a clutch in the manual gearbox. While shifting between gear ratios, fluid enables it to lock and unlock planetary gears. 

There are a number of technologies to make a car “automatic” which can be broadly classified into four groups – AMTs, CVT’s, DCT’s, iMT’s. 

Automated Manual Transmission (AMT)

Automated Manual Transmission, or AMT, is the most typically used model of automatic transmission in India. The AMT has a mechanism similar to the manual transmission. It has sensors and actuators undertaking the work of shifting gears. The AMT operates hydraulics which are linked to the electronic control unit (ECU) of the car to finish a gearshift. The ECU records and stores a pre-programmed pattern to shift gears.If the vehicle accelerates to a certain speed, the engine control unit will receive this information from the actuator and control the gearbox and clutch at the same time. AMT enables manufacturers to offer them at a reasonable price since automatic transmission models are expensive. Maruti Suzuki has been offering the AMT in automatic models of its cars namely – Celerio, Ignis or S-Presso.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT is a single speed automated gearbox, compact in length and easy in construction. The CVT container entails cone shaped pulleys, linked through a V-shaped drive belt, in which one pulley is hooked up to the engine and the opposite to the wheel. The cone shaped pulleys flow consistent with the engine revs as consistent with the electricity inputs and the power belt continues the same tension consistent with it. The cones have an impartial movement, for this reason having endless gear ratios. CVT, because it has a simple mechanism, is extra fuel-green and is smoother in comparison to standard automatics. They also are very reliable, that is why producers like Nissan and Toyota use CVTs in their cars.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

Dual Clutch transmission or DCT consists of two clutch packs. While one clutch controls the odd-numbered gears, the other controls the even numbered gears. For instance, when first gear is put, the odd clutch is in action, and the even clutch already selects the second gear, which allows constant shifts without butchering the power flow from engine to the transmission.  The bolt quick shifts influenced manufacturers to start using DCTs for supercars and sports cars. 

 Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT)

The iMT is a manual without clutch where the driver has to manually function the gear lever in the instance of an upshift or downshift while the clutch is automatically operated.  The transmission gear shift lever (TGS) is the gear level in an iMT which is attached to the intention sensor, an actuator and a transmission control unit. The TGS sends a signal to the transmission control unit when a driver needs to upshift or downshift and in return functions the hydraulic actuator to generate the hydraulic pressure which is then shifted to a cylinder through a clutch tube.  The cylinder followingly operates the clutch plate and pressure plate with the usage of the hydraulic pressure.
