CNG cars are gaining momentum in the automotive industry. The all-time record hike in fuel prices across India is pushing customers to opt for alternate fuels, hybrid and electric vehicles. CNG car sales were the highest in the financial year 2021 with a Year-on-Year growth of about 49%. The market share of CNG cars has gone up from 4% to 6% this year.
Realising the demand CNG could gain in upcoming years, automakers have been keen on introducing new cars. Maruti Suzuki stands on top in total sales of CNG cars this year and Hyundai grab second place. We have a lot of CNG cars on sale in the market, but there are more to come.
Tata Tiago and Tigor
Tata is preparing to launch a CNG equipped hatchback and a sedan. Both Tiago and Tigor sharing the same platform and engines will come with a CNG option this year. Equipped with the 1.2L revotron petrol engine, which makes 86bhp the addition of a CNG kit is expected to make it more frugal. We expect the cars to be launched in the festive season this year.
The subcompact SUV in Tata’s lineup is available in both petrol and diesel options. A 1.2L naturally aspirated Revotron petrol engine and a 1.5L turbocharged diesel engine. The Nexon is also the first EV in Tata’s lineup. Now the company has decided to add a CNG equipped engine to the Nexon. This could be the first car in India to have a petro, diesel, CNG and battery option all at one time.
Toyota Innova Crysta CNG
Toyota could be the second carmaker to come up with a CNG powered 7-seater after the Maruti Ertiga. The CNG powered Toyota Innova Crysta is in its final stages of testing. The MPV features a 2.7L dual VVT-i petrol unit which comes with a CNG kit. The Innova Crysta CNG will make it to showrooms in the coming months,
Maruti Suzuki Swift and Dzire
Similar to the Tata Tiago and Tigor, the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Dzire share a lot of similarities. Since the introduction of BSVI norms, Maruti has been offering their cars in petrol only. The Swift hatchback has been one of the most popular hatches in India. To improve options for the customers and improve efficiency Maruti has been working on the CNG versions of both Swift and Dzire.
Both the cars are equipped with the same 1.2L 4-cylinder petrol engine making 86bhp and 113Nm of torque. Both the cars have an ARAI claimed mileage of 23.3kmpl. The addition of CNG kits will improve the efficiency of the engine.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio
Another car to get a second-gen update from the car giant Maruti is the Celerio. The car has been spotted multiple times in its new avatar under huge camouflage. The new sharper design used in Celerio is expected to feature a CNG kit as well. Maruti Suzuki is known for its value-for-money products and a CNG kit offered with the Celerio will surely put it on this track.
Honda is planning to introduce a mid life cycle update for the Amaze on the 17th of August. With the same 1.2L engine packed to the update, we expect the carmaker to include a CNG variant as well. This improves fuel efficiency and attracts more customers.
The transformation from Hydrocarbons to greener fuels and EVs have already begun in India. Companies are preparing their cars for this change. However, the Government should also encourage customers and carmakers by improving CNG infrastructure across the country. They should also offer attractive incentives for purchases.
