Since its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo, the new Force Gurkha has been a model that the Indian off-roading community has been anticipating. The new Gurkha has finally been unveiled by Force Motors, with deliveries starting on October 15. The Gurkha isn’t the only body-on-frame, three-door, made-in-India off-roader on the market; the Mahindra Thar is credited with laying the foundation for this specialized segment.
Here is a detailed technical comparison of the Gurkha vs Thar to determine the best off-roader in the current Indian market.

Although the Thar’s wider tracks and longer wheelbase should improve its stability, the Gurkha’s interior room should gain from its length and height.
By comparing the off-road angles and ground clearances of both of these models, we can gain a general idea of their off-road capabilities. The Thar has a superior approach angle (4.8 degrees), departure angle (3.8 degrees), break-over angle (two degrees), and ground clearance than the new Gurkha in every area (by 21mm). With its deeper water wading credentials (rated at 50mm greater) and narrower turning circle (less by 0.5 metres), the new Gurkha reclaims some ground in terms of manoeuvrability.
The new-generation Thar has a significant weight advantage over the Gurkha, weighing around 390kg less.
However, these figures only reveal half of the story; you’ll have to wait till we compare the two off-roaders in the real world to get the full picture. It’s also worth noting that a larger Gurkha 5-door is set to be released soon.

With its 130hp, 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel engine, the Mahindra Thar stands out among these diesel powertrains. It not only produces 39 horsepower more than the Mercedes-derived 2.6-litre engine in the Gurkha, but it also produces 50 Nm more torque. The Gurkha only comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, however, the Thar provides both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, giving the Thar an advantage.
Force should have kept the old Gurkha Xtreme’s 140hp, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine since it would have been a better match for the new Thar’s diesel engine.
Suspension and safety
The Thar now has coil springs in both the front and rear suspensions in its new generation, whereas the Gurkha had coil springs in both the front and back suspensions even in the previous-gen vehicle.
Both versions come included with transfer cases that allow you to switch from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive in either high or low ratios. The Thar also has a slew of electronic safety measures, including hill start aid, hill descent control, and ESC-based brake lock differentials in the front and auto mechanical locking differentials in the rear. Although these functions are convenient, this system is fully controlled by the onboard computers and does not provide you with any individual control. The Gurkha, on the other hand, gives you a lot more control because you can lock the front and rear differentials manually, though it lacks the other electronic safety features.
Because the Gurkha is only available with a diesel engine, we haven’t included Thar’s 150hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in this comparison.

When it comes to pricing, the new Force Gurkha is roughly comparable to the Hard-top diesel-manual Thar LX – they’re about Rs 10,000 apart. The Thar LX also has an automatic gearbox option for the Hard-top model, which costs Rs 15.08 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Thar can also be ordered with a soft top, which reduces the price by Rs 10,000.
If you’re looking for an All Rounder SUV, Then the Mahindra Thar is the best option but if your sole purpose is off-roading then Force Gurkha is the one to go for. Let us know what you think!
