In a recent interview, Honda Cars India’s senior vice president, Rajesh Goel, confirmed that the company plans to introduce a hybrid version of the fifth-generation City sedan next year. He mentioned that the hybrid City model will be available in the upcoming fiscal year (April 2022 to March 2023 period).
The class-leading fuel efficiency of around 27.7 kmpl could be offered in India by the 2022 Honda City Hybrid, as it is claimed to offer 27.8 kmpl in Thailand and 27.7 kmpl in Malaysia under the local testing conditions in those countries. We can expect a fuel economy of between 17 and 19 kmpl when compared to the regular Honda City petrol.
The Honda City Hybrid 2022
The Honda City Hybrid 2022 will be one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market when it debuts. So, how are we going to make this happen? The 1.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine has a maximum power output of 98 horsepower, while the electric motors are capable of 109 horsepower. The combined power has not yet been officially calculated, but the torque output is 253 Nm.
The City Hybrid is 0.5 seconds faster than the non-hybrid model, and it has the potential to be one of the most popular hybrids when it goes on sale. The hybrid system combines the use of an electric generator with that of an electric motor. In order to turn the wheels or send electricity to the Li-ion battery, the engine turns the generator while also powering the electric motors.
Instead of using a conventional transmission, the Japanese manufacturer has disconnected the powertrain from the wheels to improve fuel economy. As a result, when charging the battery, the wheels can go at one speed while the engine goes at another. 95% of the energy saved by electrifying a hybrid vehicle is put back into the wheels.
Although it’s more fuel-efficient, the Honda City Hybrid’s battery takes up 96 litres of trunk space and makes it heavier than the standard 1.5-litre petrol engine-equipped model. It’s no secret that the hybrid City will cost more than the regular gasoline version, but it could come with a host of new features to make up for the difference.
