Hyundai’s new micro SUV is codenamed the AX1 and has been teased for the first time. The SUV will sit below the Venue in Hyundai’s lineup. The car will initially go on sale in South Korea as an entry-level electric car. Indian market will get a petrol version of the same car and it could bring in the electric version in the future.

Hyundai AX1 exterior

From the test mule which was spotted and now with the new teaser, it is evident that Hyundai is following its split headlamp design language. It is seen with a circular projector and circular DRL unit within the bumper. The upper portion is believed to house the turn indicators.

The rear lamps get an intricate triangular pattern like LED modules which is seen in all spy images. The secondary light cluster on the rear bumper is expected to mount the reverse light and indicator lights.

The Hyundai AX1 is expected to be based on the same K1 architecture that is seen in the present Grand i10 Nios. It is approximately 3.7-3.8m in length which makes it a sub 4m car and is definitely smaller than Venue. AX1 is likely to get the 1.2L petrol engine seen in Nios and some lower models could get Santro’s 1.1L petrol motor for cost-cutting purposes. It could get a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT gearbox option.

Pricing and rivals

Hyundai AX1 will rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Mahindra KUV100, Renault Kwid and the upcoming Tata HBX. The car will be going on sale in South Korea by September 2021. The car is expected to be priced between  4L to 8L Rupees ex-showroom.
