Jeep India has officially confirmed the name Meridian for its upcoming 7-seater SUV. The confirmation came through the video uploaded on their Youtube channel. The video also confirms that the SUV is being tested in India for quite some time in all kinds of terrains. The SUV has sustained different weather and road conditions all over India. They claim to have test driven the car from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
The name ‘Meridian’ has been picked over 70 other names in their list. Derived from the line of longitude, the Meridian 77° east passes through the whole length of India.
What do we know so far?
Jeep already sells this 7-seater SUV in a few overseas markets under the name of ‘Commander’. To avoid trademark issues in India, Jeep had to change the name to Meridian. Also, Jeep is updating the SUV according to the Indian customer needs.
The Meridian will be Jeep’s first 7-seater SUV in India. They confirmed that the SUV will be Made in India and Made for India. The CEO & Managing Director, Stellantis India, Rolan Bouchara also mentioned that “Our product offensive for 2022 and beyond will continue to illustrate our commitment to India as we work towards strengthening our market presence.”
The 7-seater Meridian SUV
The Meridian is based on the Compass SUV. The chassis is extended to accommodate the third row at the rear. It measures 4,794 mm in length, 1,859 mm in width, 1,682 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,794 mm. It also has a decent ground clearance of 214 mm.
The Meridian is designed with Jeep’s trademark 7-slat grille and the new LED headlights borrowed from the Compass. The flat bonnet, beefier bumper design and bigger alloy wheels give it an aggressive offroader look. The rear doors are bigger in the Meridian for the occupants to easily get in and off the third row.
Jeep has still not divulged much about the interiors for the Meridian. Looking at the Commander sold in Brazil, we can expect a premium cabin layout. Features like a 10-inch infotainment cluster along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, drive modes will come with the Meridian.
Jeep is most likely to offer the Meridian in both petrol and diesel powertrains. However, the exact specifications are yet to be disclosed.

Jeep is yet to announce the price of the Meridian in India. However, we anticipate the SUV will be priced around ₹35 lakh. As for the competition the Meridian takes on the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster. The petrol version will take on the newly launched Skoda Kodiaq facelift.
