The Kia MPV internally known as ‘KY’ was spied several times testing on Indian roads. Now the carmakers have named the MPV ‘Carens’ whose world premiere is set for the 16th of December. Kia has confirmed to launch the Carens in the first quarter of 2022 in India.

The three-row MPV would be the 4th addition to Kia’s portfolio in India. The Carens will be locally produced in Kia’s manufacturing plant in Andra Pradesh. Kia hopes that the MPV would do wonders for them in terms of sales. Tae-jin park, MD and CEO of Kia India mentioned “We are really excited to bring our fourth product for the Indian market, the Kia Carens. Kia wants to offer a premium and comfortable family RV that has a three-row seating configuration and features fitting in perfectly with India’s urban lifestyle and road conditions.”

The Kia Carens

With all the spy shots we have had, the design of the MPV is in line with the seltos. It also shares the same SP2 platform as Seltos. However, the platform is modified to make the MPV longer. This gives the extra space Kia wants to provide. The short video clip Kia shared portrays the unique triangular shaped LED DRLs.

Inside the Carens, it happens to get a similar dashboard layout as its siblings. It will also feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto connectivity. Additionally, Carens also gets automatic climate control, keyless entry, ambient lighting, multi-function steering wheel and more.

Under the hood, the Carens is most likely to be equipped with the same two engines offered in Seltos. A 1.5-L turbocharged diesel engine producing 113hp and 250Nm of torque. And a 1.5-L naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 113bhp and 244Nm of torque. Both motors are mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Launch in India

Kia Carens is to be premiered globally on 16th December. But the MPV will be launched in the first quarter of next year in India. There is no official pricelist of the MPV, which will only come during the launch.

The carens will go against the Maruti Suzuki XL6/Ertiga, Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra Marazzo. And pricing could play a major role in the success of the Carens in India.
