Kia Carens trademarked in India; Kia’s upcoming 7-seater MPV

Kia Carens MPV

It’s been no secret that Kia was working on a new MPV for India to rival the Maruti Ertiga. The MPV was codenamed KY internally and has been spotted testing several times. Reports have emerged that Kia has trademarked the name ‘Carens’ in India. This suggests that the new 7-seater MPV could be named Carens.

For those unaware, Kia already sells the Carens MPV in several international markets. The 7-seater MPV measure about 4.5m in length. Launched in the 2000s the MPV is currently in its 3rd generation in other markets. However, India bound Carens to have nothing in common with the globally sold Carens.

The Carens is likely to use Kia’s SP2 platform which underpins the Seltos and Creta SUVs. Also, we expect the three-row MPV to share a few body panels with the Seltos and Sonet.

Kia Carens Design and Dimensions

From all the spy shots surfaced it can be seen that the Carens will get a similar front fascia from the Seltos and Sonet. It includes a wide Tiger Nose grille with chrome highlights and a huge air dam in the front. The rear gets an upright MPV outline.

The Seltos measuring 4.31m in length, the MPV is expected to measure over 4.5m in length. This suggests that the MPV could measure similar to the recently launched Hyundai Alcazar. This makes sense because the MPV Should accommodate the third row. This makes the Carens longer than the Maruti Ertiga offering better legroom.

Kia Carens will be made available in two seating configurations. Either a 6-seat layout or a 7-seat layout. It also gets a panoramic sunroof and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Carens is expected to get some extra features along with the one’s available in the Seltos.

Kia KY (Carens) Powertrain

As for the powertrain, we expect the Carens to be powered with two different motors. A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 113bhp and 244Nm of torque. And a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine making 113bhp. Both motors are coupled to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Automatic transmission.

Pricing and Competition

There is no confirmation about the pricing of the MPV. But we have reports suggesting the global unveil of the Carens in the coming months. The MPV is expected to go on sale in early 2022 in the Indian market.

Coming to the competition, Carens faces a tough challenge from the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It goes against the top-spec Ertiga i.e XL6, lower trims of the Toyota Innova Crysta and the Mahindra Marazzo.
