Kia began its sales operations back in August 2019 in India. It took only 22 months for the company to go past the 2,50,000 unit sales milestone in India. This was accomplished after its total sales of 16,111 units in April 2021. It is currently no.5 in the overall passenger vehicle market and just behind Maruti and Hyundai in the utility vehicle market. It is remarkable for Kia to achieve this with just 3 cars in their portfolio. 

Kia Seltos crosses 1.75L units and Sonet passes the 70,000 mark 

The first product to come from Kia is the Seltos in August 2019. From then till the end of April 2021 the Seltos has accounted for 70% of Kia’s total car sales, which is a total of 1,78,895 units. The second product from Kia was the Sonet which was launched in 2020 September. This has reached 71,441 homes across India, making it a total of 28% of sales for Kia. The rest of the sales figure is from the Carnival, which made a total sales of  5,434 units. 

The Interesting part is the FY2021, even with the pandemic restrictions in few states, Kia had strong demand for both their SUV’s. The Seltos even moved up one rank in the best selling SUV category to 4th position when it sold 81,717 units. 

Kia aims at 30% growth in FY2022 

Kia seemed to have strong sales in FY2021 despite the bad market conditions. They believe to continue this demand with a year-on-year growth of 30% next year. According to Kia ”Despite the tough times experienced and lockdown kind of restrictions in few states, the demand seems to continue in other parts and they intend to supply these parts. “

They are also planning to ramp up their production unit in Anantapur by June-July to start the third shift. So they can meet the Pandemic related supply chain issues. The company also aims to produce 2.3 to 2.5L vehicles annually with an export target of 20% in 2021. 

Kia India Sales overview 

Kia launched its first product at different price points with multiple variants, this strategy ensured its place in the competitive SUV segment. This helped Kia reach the 25,000-mark in just 3 months and it took 7 months to touch the 75,000ark. 11 months marked its 1,00,000 units sales and it took another 11 months to reach the 2,50,000 units milestone. This is a healthy acceleration in its sales. The introduction of refreshed Seltos and Sonet with the brand’s new logo featuring on these cars will be seen to up its sales. Also, the company is to introduce a mid-size MPV codenamed KY.
