The Mahindra Scorpio 2022 has been one of the most anticipated launches. Spotted multiple times testing, the next-gen Scorpio has been delayed for obvious reasons, the Covid-19. Like many other car launches getting delayed, the Scorpio 2022 was also one of them. Although, reports tell that the SUV will debut in June next year.
But the interesting fact is that Mahindra has decided the continue selling the old gen Scorpio alongside the new-gen. Yes, you read it right. The old gen Scorpio with a few minor updates and reduced variants will still be on sale. The recently spied old gen Scorpio under partial wraps suggests a minor update in the works.
Why the decision?
Over the last two decades (almost), the SUV has had multiple facelifts and a fresh generation update in 2014. Also, the Scorpio has been the best selling model for Mahindra since its launch.
But the reason for not discontinuing the old gen Scorpio could be the seating position. With rear side facing seats the car would get a low safety rating. The same reason why the Thar was not introduced with rear side-facing seats. Now, they don’t want to compromise on the safety of the next-gen Scorpio with rear side-facing seats.
The rear side facing seats has good demand for commercial purposes in smaller towns and for security personnel. Realising this, Mahindra has decided not to discontinue the ongoing Scorpio. Instead, they will update the front fascia and interior upholstery. The front bumper is likely to be revised with a new front grille. As far as the engine is concerned, Mahindra will continue the same 2.2-L turbocharged diesel engine in 2 states of tune.
The Mahindra Scorpio 2022
The Scorpio 2022 is going to take a huge leap in terms of the overall design. The SUV will feature a fresh interior and exterior design, updated feature list, better safety and more powerful engines.
The Scorpio 2022 will use Thar’s ladder-on-frame platform with bigger dimensions. It will feature a 360-degree camera, 9-inch touchscreen system, electric sunroof, dual-zone climate control, different terrain modes and more.
It will feature a 2.0-litre mHawk diesel engine that produces 155hp and 360Nm of torque. And a 2.0-litre petrol motor will make 150hp and 300Nm of torque. Both engines are borrowed from the XUV700 but under a different state of tune. It will feature a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
According to reports, Mahindra will launch the Scorpio 2022 in June 2022. Because Mahindra wants to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Scorpio.
