Mahindra is working on launching a new base variant of the Thar which comes with a 1.5L engine. It will be priced below the existing base variant and its existing will be lower powered than the existing ones.

What’s new?

It is reported that the new Thar will be getting a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder engine in both automatic and manual variants but this model does not have a 4-wheel drive mode and comes only in rear-wheel drive, unlike the other variants which are powered by a 2.0-litre 4 cylinder m-stallion engine with a hp of 150 and 320Nm torque while the diesel variant has 2.2-litre mHawk engine with 130bhp and 320Nm. They are available in both 6- speed automatic and 6-speed manual modes of transmission.

The newer version is approximately around 100 kgs lighter than the current model and also with lower torque and horsepower. The wheels will be smaller than the current ones and are launched to target a younger audience and will be marketed as a lifestyle SUV that is more fuel-efficient than the current models. This version would not be as suited for offroading as the existing ones as it does not have a 4-wheel drive and also a lower-powered engine.

5-door Mahindra Thar

A 5-door version of the Thar is also being developed which only recently has received official approval. Mahindra will test it with the Bolero’s body. We can expect a longer wheelbase and more cabin space than the current models. It is expected to get much more powerful diesel and petrol engines than the current models of the Thar.
