Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are working with each other for the release of their upcoming compact SUV. They are developing these versions wherein tests are underway. Some test models of the SUV were spotted in the country although it was very camouflaged. From whatever was visible, the logo of Maruti Suzuki is visible. This SUV is highly anticipated for this year and both the brands are doing the testing together.
The codename for the upcoming SUV by Maruti Suzuki is internally called ‘YFG’, wherein Toyota’s version is internally called ‘D22’. The SUV is based on Toyota’s DNGA platform it will be manufactured in their Bidadi plant, Karnataka.
Maruti and Toyota’s Compact SUV: Features and tech
The new SUV of both automakers is expected to be heavily loaded with technology and features. Both the SUVs will sport a split headlamp look. Although the YFG might get LED DRLs like the S Cross, the D22 will have twin LED headlights. The ground clearance for both the SUVs is also very decent and they have a similar design at the rear. The SUVs are expected to be loaded in terms of safety features and tech as well.
Engine and Transmission
The powertrain for the new mid-size SUV is expected to have a 1.5-litre petrol engine which has strong hybrid technology. Furthermore, this feature will help the SUV in working on electric power only for a short period. The petrol engine is coming from Maruti Suzuki whereas the electric motor and hybrid system will be developed by Toyota. An option to have a diesel engine is not available.
Both the brands have been in business together around the world for many years now. Upon launch, their upcoming SUV will have competitors including Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun in the mid-size SUV segment.
