After the launch of its first CNG cars, Maruti Suzuki has achieved a new milestone in sales of 10 lakh units of CNG cars. Maruti has a wide variety of models as well as an extensive CNG model lineup. The lineup has models including Ertiga, Wagon R, Dzire, Alto and more. Here’s what we know about this breakthrough.
The CEO and Managing director of Maruti Suzuki, Kenichi Ayukawa says “As a company, our aim is to offer safe, reliable, clean, technologically advanced and environmentally-friendly vehicles to our customers. Our S-CNG range is specifically designed, developed and manufactured at our facilities to suit the Indian driving conditions”. Maruti Suzuki is making a target for the future of CNG vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki CNG sales: What do we know?
There are a total of 3,700 CNG stations in the country, which makes it comparatively more accessible. The MD of Maruti also says that the demand for CNG vehicles will be strong. This is also because the government is aiming to attain 10,000 CNG stations around the country.
The product portfolio of Maruti includes a total of 9 S-CNG models. This includes cars such as Alto, WagonR, Celerio, S-Presso, Eeco, Super Carry, Dzire, Ertiga and the Tour-S. The sale of S-CNG car models started in the year 2010. Maruti had sold a total of 15,900 vehicles in the first year itself. Between the years 2016-17, they sold around 3.5 lakh CNG vehicles. They had sales of 5.3 lakh units and 7.98 lakh units in the years 2018-19 and 2020-21.
The S-CNG technology is new and it has a feature that can switch between petrol and CNG modes in an instant. The factory-fitted CNG vehicles of Maruti Suzuki contain a fuel level indicator which is very precise and helps customers in tracking the fuel level of the car.
The automaker’s focus on giving the option of CNG vehicles was a very important part of its lineup. The decision to re-introduce the option of CNG in Celerio was fast as the new WagonR had a CNG option from the beginning. The last model to get the CNG kit model is the latest generation Dzire. Some cars like the Swift and Brezza do not have an option to get CNG. However, Maruti said that the Nexa lineup will soon be introduced with the S-CNG technology. The Baleno will be the first Nexa car with this technology.
