Passenger EV is the emerging segment in India and the car giant, Maruti Suzuki has been missing out in this segment. Now it’s getting ready to enter the segment with the WagonR EV. No specific launch window has been given to the car but we expect it to happen soon. The production version of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV was shared online by a Facebook page.

According to Maruti Suzuki India Limited had commenced testing of 50 Wagon R EV prototypes in late 2018. Over the years we have seen the prototypes evolving themselves from JDM-spec to production-ready fully wrapped models. Maruti had previously confirmed that the Wagon R EV will be limited for fleet and commercial operations initially.

According to R.C.Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki factors like affordability and ease of ownership play an important role in the success of a vehicle.

Which channel will Maruti Suzuki use to sell WagonR EV?

The car is expected to be sold under the brands Nexa premium dealership. Some details can be noted from the spy shots, the production-spec Wagon R EV looks to be more premium compared to the IC engine version. It comprises the trending split headlamp cluster with projectors and LED DRL’s. The signature tall pillar will be continued to the EV version including the side profile which looks similar to the IC version. The rear taillamps are placed just above the bumper with a high mounted stop light in the tailgate. The interior is going to premium with SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system including Apple Carplay and Andriod Auto connectivity.

It is clear that India doesn’t have a local battery manufacturing facility and most of the batteries used in EV’s are imported from China. The rising tension between India and China could affect the supply chain of batteries. India also lacks the infrastructure for EV which mainly includes charging stations. Amid all this, the EV segment is slowly making its way into the Indian market with more EV’s to be launched in 2021.  At present, the market only has 3 passenger electric vehicles, Hyundai Kona, MG ZS EV and the Tata Nexon EV. When launched the Wagon R EV will compete with these 3 cars and the upcoming Mahindra eXUV300.
