New Alfa Romeo Tonale unveiled; comes as a PHEV unit

Alfa Romeo is readying up to bring their latest plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The Italian automaker is planning to launch the crossover in the US market by 2023. The EV segment is booming and many manufacturers are taking the hybrid route instead of making a complete shift to all-electric vehicles. Here is what we know about the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

New Alfa Romeo Tonale: Exterior Styling

The Alfa Romeo design heritage can be seen in the overall design language, from the triangular grille to the black-painted air intakes.  The headlamps are sleek and get two square LED daytime running lamps. The large 19-inch wheels dominate the side profile. The automaker is also giving buyers an option for an upgrade to a 20-inch set. The window lining comes with a black paint scheme creating a sporty look.

The major design element in the rear is the new full-width LED tail lamp with the company logo at the center. Moreover, 2 massive air vents are placed at the position of the exhaust tips. Overall the car looks clean, sporty, and futuristic. The Tonale is 4529 mm long, 839 mm wide, and 1600 mm tall.

New Alfa Romeo Tonale: Interior and Tech

Alfa Romeo has taken a retro classic approach to the interior styling of the Tonale. Instead of going with the modern touch controls, the automaker has included a lot of Physical buttons. However, the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports all modern connectivity options including Apple car play and Android auto.

The interior has a sophisticated look when compared to the minimal design seen in most new-age cars. This doesn’t mean the cabin looks bland and outdated, the Tonales interior is incredibly posh and it’s covered with leather and aluminium trims. In fact, there is extensive use of materials like suede and Alcantara often seen in high-end supercars.  

Alfa Romeo is providing the option to equip the Tonale with level 2 autonomous driving tech. Moreover, this helps in getting adaptive cruise control with a self-centring system. This system can help in auto-adjusting the steering to keep you in the middle of a lane. Each Tonale will come equipped with its own unique NFTs (non-fungible tokens). This tech will help in recording the data to certify the vehicle’s mileage. 

Powertrain

The Tonale gets its power from a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which comes integrated into a six-speed automatic gearbox. Moreover, the brand is also providing a second more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. this unit gets a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Furthermore, the highlight of the Tonale is its 15.5-kWh battery that can provide a range of up to 50 km. This setup takes up to 2 hours to fully charge the battery. Outside the US the Tonale will come in two 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine variants and European models will feature an optional diesel motor.
