Toyota India plans to manufacture new hybrid engines along with the upcoming midsize SUV and C-segment MPV. Various reports claim that the company has already started producing 2.0-litre and 1.5-litre hybrid engines. As of now, only limited units are manufactured, but the company plans to increase the numbers in the future.
More about the hybrid engines
Currently, the engines are being produced for testing. However, the company will start producing production units in the near future. Moreover, several reports hint at a new 2.0-litre petrol engine Toyota is currently developing. We will have to wait and find out details about the models that will feature this new engine.
The engine will use a strong hybrid system. This is better than the common mild-hybrid system currently in use in multiple Maruti Suzuki cars. Moreover, the strong hybrid system could be alike to the one used in Toyota Camry. The battery pack will be large enough to run the car solely on electric power. This reduces the overall load from the engine and enhances fuel efficiency. The system will also provide torque assist at lower speeds.
Toyota-Suzuki Midsize SUV
The upcoming mid-size SUV will be built on Toyota’s new DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform. Currently, the platform underpins the Avanza and the Raize SUV. Unlike the current rebadged vehicles, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki will be selling different versions built on the same platform. Maruti Suzuki has given the codename YFG for its upcoming compact SUV. On the other hand, Toyota calls its version the D22.
Toyota’s Bidadi plant will be in use for the production of the upcoming vehicle. Both domestic and international units will be made in the Bidadi plant. Furthermore, we expect both manufacturers to launch the SUVs sometime this year.
