As 2022 marks ten years since the launch of the first unit of the Renault Duster in July 2012, Renault India has decided to halt the production of the Duster SUV. With Duster being its most successful SUV, the French carmaker has only three offerings – Kiger, Kwid, and Triber.
There are a lot of ‘firsts’ to the Renault Duster’s credits. From being the first-ever mass-market product from Renault to being the first monocoque midsize SUV, Duster dominated the SUV game in its golden days. For the average SUV enthusiast, the discontinuation of Duster is surely what can be called a – midsize bummer.
Renault Duster: A ride back to memory lane
The Duster was one of those very few cars that had a launch worth its wait. At its release in 2012, Duster was an instant hit with its superior ride quality, roomy cabin, and powerful diesel engine options. Right after crossing a sales figure of 1 lakh units in 2014, to stay heads up in the game, the Duster gained an AWD variant, which increased popularity and sales for one of the most profitable SUVs.
The Duster launched with three engine choices – a 1.5-litre 85 PS diesel, a 1.6-litre 106 PS petrol, and a 1.5-litre 110 PS diesel. All three options were on sale with a standard manual gearbox. A brief six years later, in 2020, Renault India discontinued the diesel AWD variant.
Renault: The launch of new engines
Renault Duster got its first basic facelift in 2016. This noted the inclusion of diesel versions with AMT transmission and later petrol versions with CVT transmission. The 1.6-litre petrol engine was replaced by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is a little more refined than the standard one. The new turbo-petrol worked out 156 hp, making the Duster one of its class’s most effective midsize SUVs.
However, irrespective of the discontinuation, Renault is reasonably expected to launch the all-new Duster in the Indian market. There is no confirmation on the date of the launch yet. The French carmaker verified that it will be in 2023.
