Tata Motors has announced that the Tata Altroz, it’s premium hatchback, has reached 100,000 units sold. After being unveiled in a big-bang ceremony in January 2020, the Altroz has reached this milestone under two years after its launch.
The Altroz was the first model to use Tata’s ALFA architecture. It was designed to compete with premium hatchback favourites like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, and Volkswagen Polo. Since the launch, it has risen to become one of the most popular models in its segment, with average monthly sales in the range of 6,000 units.
Tata Motors mentioned that the Altroz had the most takers in March of this year, with 7,550 units sold in that month. Since then, Tata claims the hatchback has averaged 6,000 monthly sales and has surpassed the new-generation Hyundai i20 as the country’s second best-selling premium hatchback, with the Altroz claiming a 20% market share in the premium hatchback sector.
Apart from being one of the newest options in its segment, the Altroz has profited from the i20’s difficulty to match its predecessor’s popularity, and it also has the distinction of being the only hatchback currently on sale in India to get a five-star safety certification from Global NCAP. Apart from the i20, the Altroz is the only premium hatchback with a diesel engine; nonetheless, the diesel sales are a small percentage of total Altroz sales.
The Tata Altroz was only available with a 1.2-litre normally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine at the time of its launch. Tata introduced the iTurbo version of the hatch this year, which features a turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre petrol engine with 110 horsepower, and a few months ago, the stealthy ‘Dark’ version. It is priced between Rs 5.85 lakh and Rs 9.60 lakh (ex-showroom).
