Reportedly Tata was working on an SUV Coupe which was supposed to be called the Nexon Coupe. Later they had to hold the development for various reasons. Now Tata has once again started working on the Coupe that will initially come as an EV. Rumoured to come by 2023 the Nexon Coupe will rival the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra XUV900 Coupe planned for 2024 launch.
Tata Nexon Coupe Powertrain
To be launched as an all-electric Coupe the SUV might feature the same battery as the long-range Nexon EV scheduled to launch this year. It will use a new 40 kWh battery which is 30% bigger than the battery in the regular Nexon EV. A total range of 400+ km can be expected on a single full charge.
In a later stage, an internal combustion engine-powered Nexon Coupe is also in the cards. Leaving the smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine, Tata is likely to fit the bigger 1.5-litre Revotorq turbo-diesel unit used in the Nexon. It might get the updated 1.5-litre unit complying with the BSVI 2 norms due in 2023.
There are reports about a new 1.5-litre Revotron turbo-petrol engine being developed for the Coupe. It will produce around 160 hp of power coupled to the same 5-speed manual transmission.
Tata Nexon Coupe SUV
The Nexon Coupe will be built on Tata’s X1 platform that also underpins the ongoing Nexon. Although significant changes will be made for the Coupe. The length of the car is likely to measure 4.3 m, whereas the Nexon falls under the sub-4m compact SUV segment. The extra length is to accommodate the longer rear overhang.
The car will have major design changes in the front and the rear. It will feature a new front nose design and a coupe-like roofline at the rear. The extra length will improve the cabin and boot space. The wheelbase will improve by 50mm with a bigger boot. The extra overhang will also make the rear doors long.
Tata Sales 2022
Tata has registered strong sales in 2022. They saw their highest ever sales (in a single month) in Jan 2023 with 41,000 units and sold 39,980 units last month. A strong SUV lineup with reasonable pricing and good safety is the key to their strong sales. Nexon is the best seller for the company with 12,259 and 8,225 units in Jan and Feb respectively.
Tata launched the Altroz DCA this week. The new DCA is only available with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. We expect the long-range Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Altroz EV to be the next launches from Tata.
