The EV segment in India is currently dominated by Tata Motors, thanks to the Nexon EV. Following the SUVs success, Tata decided to add the Tigor EV to its portfolio. In recent developments, Tata has given the green light for the Sierra. The SUV will make its way in 2025 and probably as an EV.

The Tata Sierra

The Sierra was a legend back in its days with a unique 3-door design. It was named the first true SUV by Tata.

The Sierra EV concept was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. It gathered a lot of attention for its futuristic design and styling. It will be the first model to be developed and launched under Tata’s dedicated EV division, TPEML. The SUV will be designed as an EV from the scratch and will not be offered in other conventional engines.

The Nexon and Tigor EVs are based on the platforms as their ICE counterparts. Unlike them, the Sierra EV will be based on the new Sigma platform designed for EVs. This new platform is tweaked and modified for better battery packaging. The Sigma platform is spacious, more energy-efficient and light compared to the EVs developed from their ICE platforms.

Unlike the retro Sierra with a 3 door layout, the new Sierra EV will feature a 5 door layout. But the SUV is still under development and will not hit the market until 2025.

Tata plans for India

Even though the Sierra will be the first EV to launch under the TPEML brand, we expect a few more EVs to come before this. But, these electric vehicles will be based on their existing ICE platforms. The next addition to Tata’s EV lineup will be the Altroz EV. Tata is also working on a long-range version of the existing Nexon EV which will debut in 2022.

Also, Tata is focusing on the CNG segment which is dominated by Maruti. They have lined up the Tiago and Tigor CNG versions to be launched this month.
