After the introduction of the new emission regulations in India, Tata Motors did not hesitate to discontinue its 1.0L 3-cylinder diesel engine from the Tiago and Tigor lineup. Now with only petrol engine option, the Tiago has been doing decent numbers in sales. So Tata has geared up to introduce a CNG powered hatchback in India. Along with Tata Tiago, the Tigor is also expected to get the CNG treatment. The new models are expected to be launched for Diwali this year.
Design-wise the Tata Tiago CNG is exactly the same as its petrol counterpart, both exterior and interior have no major changes. It still has the tri-arrow theme on the front grilles. On the exterior, we could spot some features like the projector headlamps, LED DRL’s, shark fin antenna, high mounted LED stop lamps, LED taillamps. We don’t have details on the cabin, the interior is expected to remain identical to the existing petrol-powered models.

The spied Tiago CNG is a mid-level XZ trim that will continue with the existing 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engine which churns out 86bhp and 113nm of torque. It is likely to be offered only in a 5-speed manual transmission option. The CNG variant will improve the efficiency marginally but there will also be a slight drop in power output. The CNG kit from the company will take up some space in the boot.
Because of the low running costs of CNG cars compared to a petrol engine, would interest some of the diesel engine buyers. Tata wants to join the race with Maruti and Hyundai in this segment. When launched the Tata Tiago CNG will go against the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG and Hyundai Santro CNG.
