Jeep has officially unveiled the all-new Grand Cherokee SUV, which will be sold in India. The new two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee joins the three-row Grand Cherokee L, which was unveiled just a few months ago, as the second model in the latest-generation Grand Cherokee lineup.

What’s New

The new Grand Cherokee SUV is 294mm shorter than the Grand Cherokee L, and the five-seat SUV shares practically everything with the Grand Cherokee L save for a few body panels and one less row of seats. Both versions appear to be relatively identical at first glance, but closer inspection reveals a number of design changes, similar to those found on the two-row Compass and the recently released three-row Commander (Meridian for India).

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, has a more rakish style in the back compared to the three-row version, which is comparable to the Compass and Meridian. Certain design components, such as active grille shutters, air curtains, and reworked rear pillars, are included in the 2019 Grand Cherokee to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Overall, the design resembles that of the previous-generation model.

The inside is quite similar to that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L, with the exception of a new 10.1-inch screen incorporated in the dashboard that is dedicated to the front passenger. The 10.1-inch central infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster of equal size are also available. A 10-inch head-up display, a wireless smartphone charging pad, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as back seat entertainment screens, are among the other features.

Engine And Powertrain

The Grand Cherokee has long been one of Jeep’s most popular SUVs, and the model on display today will be available in a variety of engine and transmission choices, depending on the market. A 290hp 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine will kick things off, and it’s been seen in the previous Grand Cherokee as well as cars like the Wrangler. The next engine will be a 357-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8, which will also be found in other Jeep models across the world. Both vehicles are mated to an eight-speed AT.

In addition, the Grand Cherokee, like the Wrangler and a few other Jeep models, now features Jeep’s 4xe technology. The SUV, like the Wrangler, has a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with twin electric motors and a lithium-ion battery that produces 375 horsepower and 637Nm of peak torque. The plug-in hybrid powertrain is powered by a 400V 17kWh battery, which may provide a 40-kilometer electric-only range or a total driving range of 712 kilometers. There are three driving modes available to help you manage your energy use.

The 4xe system will be available on the tough Trailhawk model as well. Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system is included, as is a two-speed transfer box, an electric limited-slip differential, and a two-speed transfer box. The Trailhawk 4xe features a 278mm ground clearance and a 610mm water wading capacity. Also, the high-voltage electronics are sealed and watertight, and the battery is protected by underfloor skid plates.

Local Assembly

While the model presented today is the left-hand drive layout geared primarily at countries like North America and the Middle East, The Grand Cherokee will be produced in India for the first vehicle using CKD kits. Jeep’s Ranjangaon facility is also home to the Wrangler, which is being built there as well. According to our sources, the made-in-India Grand Cherokee would first be marketed only in India; however, the model could be exported to other right-hand-drive regions where the made-in-India Compass is already sold. There is no word on whether the next Grand Cherokee will come with a diesel engine.

India’s Launch Strategy

Jeep is planning two new models for the Indian market. The Meridan SUV, which is effectively a three-row version of the Compass and will be on sale in mid-2022, will most likely be the first. While the Grand Cherokee is also expected to arrive in India in 2022, no specific date has been set yet.
