Mercedes AMG has teased a plug-in hybrid version of the GT63 4-Door Coupé, which will make its public debut at the Munich Motor Show.
On social media, the front end of the new range-topping performance saloon was pictured, along with confirmation that it will be unwrapped in its entirety on September 1, just before the show. The AMG GT73e is expected to have a combined power output of over 800 horsepower. It will compete globally with the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E Hybrid P3 PHEV system to be seen in future AMG models.
What’s It About
The ‘GT73e’ is the first of a series of new Mercedes AMG hybrid plug-in models. It will be operated by a modified version of the GT63’s 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, mated to an electric motor that will provide a “substantial” performance boost. The GT73e’s electric motor alone will produce up to 201 horsepower, resulting in a total output of over 800 horsepower.
In its electrified form, the engine, which produces 639 horsepower in the GT63 S, is said to offer “previously unattainable levels of power and torque” for a road-going four-door AMG. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid will be a direct competitor. It will also be a successor to AMG’s first model, the 300CE Hammer, which helped establish the company as a manufacturer of sports cars with supercar efficiency.
Top-tier versions of the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the upcoming Mercedes AMG SL grand tourer will both use the model’s P3 PHEV system. It could also be used in the Mercedes AMG C63 4Matic’s petrol-electric successor, where it will be paired with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine rather than a large-capacity V8.
