A significant number of new car buyers in the country opts for compact SUVs. On this account, compact SUVs have become vital contributors to overall car sales in India. Tata Motors tops the sales chart over the past month. Apart from this, it is clear that the majority of customers have realized the importance of safety in cars and have shifted to the ever-glorious SUVs. Here are some of the top-selling compact SUVs of the country this year :
1. Tata Nexon
One of the biggest milestones in the industry this year has been Tata Motor’s rise as India’s second-largest carmaker ahead of Hyundai Motors. Its subcompact SUV, the Nexon is the reason for the brand’s big success. With a whopping YoY growth of 68%, Tata went from selling 8,225 units in January 2021 to a figure of 13,816 units in January 2022.
This meant that the Nexon stole the show in this year’s starting sales figures. Pricing begins from ₹7.39 lakh and goes up to ₹13.34 lakh. The Nexon is offered in 40 variants – the base model of Nexon is XE and the top variant Nexon XZA Plus (O) Dark Edition Diesel which comes at a price tag of ₹13.34 Lakh.
2. Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue was launched in India in 2019 and was one of India’s best selling subcompact SUVs. It quickly became the best-selling vehicle in its segment when Maruti Suzuki unplugged the Vitara Brezza diesel. But the Venue’s instant success was short-lived. The increasing competition in parallel put a dent in the sales of the vehicle.
There was a minor downfall of – 3.41% in the YoY of the car with the sales dropping from 11,779 units in January 2021 to 11,377 units in January 2022. This figure showed a major decline to a range of SUVs that once sold in all its supremacy. In recent developments, Hyundai has started testing the 2022 Venue facelift in India. We expect the SUV to be launched shortly after the launch of the Creta facelift this year.
3. Maruti Vitara Brezza
The Maruti Vitara Brezza is one of the best selling SUVs in the Indian market. The SUV’s popularity comes from its reliability and cost-effective maintenance. However, the dated Vitara Brezza needs some major updates to keep up with the competition.
Naturally, there was a decline in the sales figure as a result of the primitivity in its model. Sales of the Vitara Brezza dropped from 10,623 units in January 2021 to 9,567 units in January 2022. This resulted in a YoY drop of -9.85% in the sales figures. A vehicle with all its potential, the Vitara Brezza’s all-new 2022 model will hopefully do well on the numbers.
4. Kia Sonet
The Kia Sonet and Hyundai’s Venue share the same platform but they evidently look very different. The Sonet with its tiger grille in the front looks muscular and handsome. The cousins are not the same dimensionally as well. The Sonet is 7 mm taller and has extra 42 litres of boot space than the Venue. All of this being said, it is a coherent fact that the Sonet isn’t doing well with its number.
It had the most depressing decline in this year’s sales report accounting for a downfall of sales from 8,859 units in January 2021 to 6,904 units in January 2022 – an estimate of -22.06% drop in YoY sales. It is far time that Kia has a choice to either up its game to a whole new level or to become washed out in the charts.
5. Mahindra Thar
The current Mahindra Thar went on sale in India in 2020 and was an instant hit. Despite the long waiting period due to the semiconductor crisis, the demand for the SUV has not declined. They have upped the production of the Thar to keep up with the demand in the market.
A great boom in the YoY sales growth of 47.39% indicates how Thar has amplified its brand as one of the best compact SUVs to be sold this year. According to the 2022 sales report, a total of 4,646 units were sold in January 2022 as compared to January 2021 when only a total of 3,152 was sold.
