The past couple of years has been a nightmare for most of the sectors in India including the automotive sector. The sales have been inconsistent across the year due to the pandemic and the semiconductor shortage affecting many industries. Putting all this behind, the carmakers have seen some positive sales at the beginning of 2022.
Maruti Suzuki along with topping the overall sales for January 2022 has also topped the best selling hatchback list for January 2022. The carmaker has secured the top 4 spots in this segment with Hyundai in the 5th spot. Let’s dive in and find out the detailed sales report for the top-selling hatchback in January 2022.
1. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The Indian consumers have witnessed the Maruti Wagon R for over two decades now and the hatch is still going strong. Since its launch in 1999, we have seen the car change 2 generations. The ongoing Wagon R is the third generation model introduced in 2019. It is due to get some updates which Maruti have planned to introduce this year.
The Wagon R registered a total sales of 20,334 units in the month of January 2022. This is an improvement compared to 17,165 units in January 2021. The YoY growth is about 18.46% for the Wagon R. It has a lead of over 1,200 units compared to the second car on the list.
2. Maruti Suzuki Swift
The next on the list is the Maruti Suzuki Swift. It secured a total sales of 19,108 units which is 11.22% more than the sales in January 2021 (17,180 units). The ongoing model of Swift is the third generation model which was updated in 2020.
17 years and going, the Swift has been one of the best selling hatchbacks in India. The car surpassed the 25 lakh sales mark in India last year.
3. Maruti Suzuki Alto
Alto has been one of the best entry-level cars in the Indian market. Even though Alto has secured the 3rd spot on the list, it has negative YoY growth. Selling 12,342 units in January 2022, the Alto has witnessed -32% YoY growth with 18,260 unit sales in January 2021.
In order to keep up with its competition, Maruti is lining up the facelift for the Alto. Scheduled to launch by the end of 2022, the Alto facelift was spotted testing in India. This update could help Maruti to boost its overall sales.
4. Maruti Suzuki Celerio
The current Celerio was launched in November 2021. This is the second-gen Celerio which was updated after 7 years since its launch. By looking at the sales we can tell that the update has certainly worked for Maruti Suzuki.
The Celerio sales have improved from 6,963 units in January 2021 to 8,279 units in January 2022 giving it a YoY growth of almost 19%. The next big launch from Maruti is the 2022 Baleno facelift. It is scheduled to launch next week in India.
5. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
After launching the first-gen i10 in 2007, Hyundai updated it with the Grand i10 (second-gen) in 2013. The third generation was introduced as the Grand i10 Nios in 2019. The hatchback managed to sell just 5,968 units last month compared to 10,865 units in January 2021. This is a decline of almost half of what it did last year.
The exact YoY decline was -47% for the grand i10 Nios. It seems that Hyundai needs to update its hatch quickly to keep up with the market leader, Maruti Suzuki. Although, they are updating their best seller, the Creta. The next launch from Hyundai will be the 2022 Creta facelift.
