Toyota held the Mirai hydrogen FCEV launch event today. The Minister of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari had the honour to launch the car. This is the second generation Mirai that was introduced back in 2020 December Globally.
Toyota initiated the Mirai pilot project in collaboration with ICAT and IOCL. ICAT is a government-owned automotive testing and homologation agency that will evaluate the Mirai on Indian road and climatic conditions. Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will assist Toyota to implement the infrastructure and supply the hydrogen fuel.
They also disclosed other goals Toyota and the Indian government has planned for a better, cleaner and greener future. Read below to know more about it.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)
Before we get into the details of Mirai let’s understand the working on an FCEV. FCEVs have hydrogen storage tanks and fuel cells. The hydrogen and the oxygen from the atmosphere are combined in the fuel cell which generates electricity to drive the car.
Just like a conventional EV, FCEVs have electric motors driven by the fuel cell. The electricity generated here propels your car and the only emission an FCEV gives out is water.
Along with the launch of the Mirai they also gave a glimpse of the roadmap set to achieve zero CO2 emission. They had previously announced their environmental challenge 2050 in 2015 to address climate change, water shortage & resource depletion, and loss of bio biodiversity.
They aim to achieve close to 0% CO2 emission from both production and driving of Toyota cars by the year 2050.
Rising fuel prices, strict government regulations to reduce harmful emissions are forcing carmakers to shift to alternative fuels or technologies. The hydrogen fuel cell technology is not only aimed at passenger cars, but also at buses, trucks, trains and even ships. This would be a huge step towards our nation’s pledge to Atmanirbhar Bharat to become self-reliant.
Toyota has also promised to introduce the Camry with a flex-fuel engine in the coming months.
1. Is the Toyota Mirai an electric vehicle?
Yes, the Mirai is an Electric vehicle but works on a different technology compared to a conventional EV.
2. Is Hydrogen fuel cheaper than conventional fuel (petro or diesel)?
Yes, hydrogen fuel is more expensive than conventional fuel. But it is more efficient and eco friendly than fossil fuels.
