Toyota had recently launched the new Toyota Rumion MPV in the South African market. Rumion is a re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Toyota and Maruti have been in partnership for quite a while now, Toyota has rebadged cars like Maruthi Baleno, Brezza, and Ciaz. Now, Toyota has trademarked Rumion in India, does this mean the rebadged MPV is going to hit the Indian market?
Toyota Rumion: Exterior and Interior Styling

When it comes to styling, Toyota Rumion and Maruti Ertiga are indistinguishable. Toyota has made small changes to the front grille.
All the body panels, headlamp, and taillamp, and alloy wheels are the same for both vehicles. Inside the cabin, Rumion gets the dashboard and infotainment system similar to the Ertiga. Unlike Ertiga, Toyota Rumion comes with all-black interior styling. The 7-inch infotainment system comes with apple car play and android auto connectivity.
Safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera, reverse parking sensor are included. Rumion is also available in an 8 seater seating layout. Currently, Rumion is sold in three different variants in the south African market- S, SX, and TX. The color options provided by Toyota are- Azure blue, Autumn blaze red, Mystic pearl white, Seal grey metallic, Shadow black pearl.
Toyota Rumion: Engine and Transmission
Under the hood, Rumion gets the same 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine that the Ertiga comes with. The gasoline-powered engine can produce 105hp and 138 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota’s upcoming Launch and future
With Toyota registering the Rumion name in India, this suggests a possible launch of the MPV in our market, although there is no confirmation yet. However, it’s worth noting that the Rumion for sale in South Africa is produced here, as part of Toyota’s deal to supply India-made Suzuki models to South Africa.
Rumion is expected to be launched after the launch of the Ciaz-based Belta sedan. Toyota has planned to launch the Belta in 2022 as a replacement for the discontinued sedan – Toyota Yaris.
