Currently, the hottest segment in the market is the compact SUV segment. Companies have been busy developing their respective SUVs for India to get their hold on the market share. Due to the second wave of the pandemic all brands are having a hard time meeting their planned target sales. In this article, we are going to see the upcoming compact SUVs from Maruti, Citroën and Tata this year.

Next-generation Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

Launched back in 2016 the Vitara Breeza was a massive hit among the SUVs. The spacious sub-4-meter Breeza was a stand-up SUV design that lit the sales chart on fire. Despite the BSVI norms Maruti managed well to keep up the momentum going with only the petrol model. The car received a facelift last year with some minor changes in design and cosmetics.

Now the brand has decided to give the car a new face. The next-gen Vitara Breeza is rumoured to be launched in the third quarter of 2021. The car will be based on the brand’s new lightweight HEARTECT platform, which will make use of high strength steel for better safety and stability. The car will feature a larger touchscreen infotainment system, electric sunroof, cruise control and more.

Maruti will carry on with the K series 1.5L petrol engine with the mild hybrid system. But we expect Maruti to ramp up the mild-hybrid system with a larger battery and powerful electric motor which improves the efficiency of the car. We could also expect the return of the 1.5L diesel engine after a considerable gap. The Vitara Breeza will rival the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Honda WRV, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300.

Citroën C21 – Upcoming Compact SUVs 2021

Citroën recently launched its first offering in India, the C5 Aircross SUV which caught a lot of eyes with its brilliant design. Now the brand is getting ready to roll out its first locally developed car, which is internally codenamed the C21. The car is expected to be launched in October of 2021.

The car will be based on the Groupe PSA’s Common  Modular Platform (CMP). This will be the first car to be launched under Citroen’s C-Cubed program in India and there are three new cars planned under this program. All these cars will be designed and developed in India.

The C21 is likely to be available only in the petrol engine option. Offered with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged powertrains. The naturally aspirated engine is to be offered with manual transmission but the turbocharged petrol engine to be offered in both manual and automatic gearbox options. It could also be the first car in India to feature a flex-fuel system that is compatible with ethanol blends starting from 27% to entirely on biofuel.

Tata HBX Micro SUV

The expectation from the Tata Micro SUV codenamed HBX has been high since it was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020. The practicality of the SUV with its bold and muscular design meant that people really got interested in it. We even had a glimpse of the interior design of the car, it looks promising and modern. Tata is planning to launch the Micro SUV by October 2021, which will rival the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Renault Kwid.

The SUV is based on the locally developed ALFA modular platform and will be designed on the brand’s new IMPACT DESIGN 2.0 philosophy. It is also rumoured that the Micro SUV will be called the Timero. The car will be powered by a 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. It produces a power output of 86bhp and 113nm of torque. We can also expect a 1.2L turbo petrol version which makes 100bhp. It gets both Manual and Automatic transmission options.
