Honda has finally confirmed the launch of the Honda City Hybrid in India. The sedan was supposed to go on sale last year. Because of the pandemic and production crisis (chip shortage), the car was pushed to this year. According to reports, the City Hybrid will come in the second quarter of 2022.
The 2022 Honda City is the first in the segment to get a hybrid powertrain. It is likely to feature Honda’s Sensing Suite safety technology. To understand more, read the whole article.
Honda city hybrid: Pricing and powertrain
The present 5th gen Honda City starts at Rs. 11.23 lakh and the top-spec diesel trim costs Rs. 15.18 lakh. The upcoming Honda City hybrid price is still not out. But we expect it to be costlier than the ongoing model. The introduction of the hybrid tech and Honda Sensing Suite will bump up the price. It won’t be a surprise if the sedan goes past the 20 lakh mark.
In terms of the engine and transmission, there is no change expected in the Honda City hybrid. But the addition of the hybrid system (i-MMD) i.e the 2 electric motors is the biggest difference. One of the motors is coupled to the engine that works as a generator, known as an integrated starter generator (ISG). The other motor is placed on the front axle that delivers the power generated.
Like any other hybrid, the City also gets 3 driving modes – ICE, hybrid and fully electric. This makes it the first sedan in its segment to feature a fully electric drive mode. Reports claim that the City Hybrid is capable of delivering 27.8 kmpl of mileage.
Improved features
Apart from the features already in the City, Honda is ready to bring in the ‘Honda Sensing Suite’. The City would be the first Honda car to feature this safety tech in India. The technology offers both active and passive safety features. It includes an emergency braking and front collision warning system, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, auto high beam assist and more.
Honda City Hybrid Rivals
The Honda City will rival the Hyundai Verna, recently launched Skoda Slavia and the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus. The two new sedans from the VW group seems to have caught a lot of attention since their launch. A high level of localization and a good amount of space and features are the pros for these new sedans.
The question is will Honda get the recipe right for the upcoming City Hybrid? Are the hybrid powertrain and Honda Sensing Suite safety updates sufficient to keep its crown? We will have to wait for the cars to arrive.
