Volkswagen is ready to end the production of both Polo and Vento in India. It is going to be effective from Q2, 2022. An exact date is unavailable but we expect them to stop receiving bookings for the cars from June 2022. The decision comes after VW decides to concentrate on its India 2.0 Strategy.
Volkswagen is in their next phase of plans for India, the 2.0 strategy. They have a flexible new platform and plan to heavily localize the cars. The MQB AO IN platform is specifically designed for India. This includes the already introduced Skoda Slavia & Kushaq along with the Taigun and upcoming Virtus sedan. They want to smoothen their production once the new cars arrive forcing them to put an end to the Polo and Vento.
The Polo and Vento have been in the market for a dozen years. These are the only cars to still use the outdated PQ platform from Volkswagen. It is time to move and keep up with the fast-evolving market.
The Vento will be replaced by the upcoming Virtus sedan. But, VW has not announced a replacement for the Polo and they don’t intend to. Although, they intend to introduce the 7th gen Polo in a couple of years.
The Siblings: Volkswagen Polo and Vento
Polo was the best selling car for VW in India. It was the year 2009 when Polo was first produced in India and a year later followed the Vento. It was also the first car to be produced in their Chakan plant, Maharashtra.
Over the years, Volkswagen has constantly updated the design and powertrain for both cars. Polo has witnessed a total of 10 different engine options over the years. Starting from the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.2-litre diesel engine to the present 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
Volkswagen also introduced the 3-door GTI in 2016. It was limited to 99 units and was priced at a whopping ₹25.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It featured a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor producing 190 hp and 250 Nm of torque.
Volkswagen plans for India
Volkswagen recently launched the Taigun and the Taigun SUVs in India. Along with this, they sell the T-Roc SUV. They have scheduled the World Premiere of the Virtus on the 8th of March. It will compete against the Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City and the sibling Skoda Slavia.
