Volkswagen’s most successful and iconic premium hatchback in India, the Polo is coming to an end. Yes, after 12 successful years in the Indian market Volkswagen has decided to put an end to this legend. To celebrate its 12 years of domination in the market and to bid adieu, Volkswagen has introduced the limited-edition Polo Legend. Only 700 of these models will be sold. What’s new in this limited edition polo? Scroll down to know more.
Pricing and rivals
The VW Polo GT TSI is currently priced at Rs. 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom). For the Polo Legend, we can expect the exact same pricing. The brand will make the Legend edition available for all its customers in their 151 dealerships across India.
As for the competition, the Polo takes on the Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz, and Tata Altroz. When it comes to comfort features, Polo certainly lacked a few compared to its rivals. But nobody could match its build quality, engine performance and on-road driveability.
Volkswagen Polo Legend: Engine
As such, the Polo Legend edition will only be available as a fully loaded GT TSI trim. Therefore, it will come with the current 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It will produce 110 hp and 175 Nm of torque. The GT trims are only available in a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission option.
Polo has seen different engine configurations over the years. We have also seen the bigger 1.6-litre and 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. However, the current 1.0-litre petrol engine is small, efficient, refined and fun to drive. It can go from 0 to 100 kmph in under 10 sec making it one of the fastest hatchbacks in the country.

Interior and features
The Polo Legend will use the same interior as the ongoing GT TSI variant without any changes. The existing multi-function flat-bottom steering wheel, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, auto-dimming IRVMs, rear AC Vents, cooled glovebox, rain-sensing wipers and front centre armrest will be carried over.
The Polo is also well equipped with safety features. Starting with the use of high strength steel frame and galvanized steel body. In addition, the Polo received 4-stars in the GNCAP safety rating for adult occupants. It also gets front dual airbags, ABS, ESC, and hill hold assist. The Volkswagen Connect app opens up more features like real-time location, geo-fencing, service records, fuel range with the closest fuel station and more.
Volkswagen will pull the plug on both Polo and the Vento models in India. The reasons for this decision are decreasing sales and age among many. But still, they have sold over 3 lakh units of Polo since its debut in 2010.
According to Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India “The Volkswagen Polo is an iconic carline that has evoked various emotions amongst consumers. From its market introduction till date, the Volkswagen Polo has enjoyed the privilege of being the first car for a family, an enthusiast’s dream and the preferred choice for a mother owning to its timeless and sporty design, safety, fun to drive experience and strong build quality. The Volkswagen Polo has been the brand’s much-loved product that deserves a grand celebration. For this, the brand is introducing the celebratory limited “Legend Edition” for the enthusiasts who will take pride in owning the last limited units of the iconic Polo.”
Volkswagen has already announced the replacement for the Vento. The all-new Global Sedan, Virtus will take its spot. But there is no replacement for the Polo. The 6th Gen Polo sold in other markets will not be introduced here.
Is Volkswagen making a mistake by not introducing the next-gen Polo in India? Will the Polo come back in a different avatar in the future? We will have to wait to answer these questions.
1. Will the Volkswagen Polo come back to India?
Rumours are that Volkswagen will sell the polo GTI as CBUs in India. It is possible that VW might introduce the next-gen Polo by the end of 2023 or 2024.
2. Which models does Volkswagen currently sell in India?
Apart from the Polo and Vento, Volkswagen sells the T-Roc, Tiguan facelift, the all-new Taigun and Virtus.
